Dog walking gum tree & internet adds An insight to dog walking by a reputable professional pet care company

So you want to be a dog walker?

How we accumulate our clients mostly is when they are at their wits end and they have been left in the lurch had their time wasted by so called unprofessional people who think that dog walking would be  fun & easy money. All clients want is a reliable service that will turn up and walk their dogs. Rain hail or shine. You also do not have to mind picking up other peoples dogs poo.

Let me tell you dog walkers earn every cent they make & should be respected. When most people want to pay you to walk a dog it is not because the dogs are easy to walk believe me. Most clients have big pully, unruly dogs who are dog aggressive not trained to leash walk ect.To be pulled around by a big pully or small pully dog trying to control them for a full 1/2  hour or full hour is not fun. We trail and test walkers over a 2 week period.

The drop out rate is incredible. In 5 years I have found 4 regular reliable people who walk dogs all day. This would be out of close to a hundred that we have interviewed and started to trial. Not only have they wasted my time but have wasted the time of my dedicated team who help along the way with the process. To give help them the so called easy making money job of their dreams.

Some of these advertised dog walkers on gum tree and other employment internet sites.

Always make me laugh or smile with yeah right when I see them advertise walking your dog for $5 or $10 per hour  for  2 dogs $12 to $18 and then they offer a price for 3 or 4 not only is this unprofessional as it is against the law in the dog act to walk more than 2 dogs at a time If you are going to work with dogs you should know the council rules and regulations of how many dogs is acceptable to walk at each time.If you want a career in dog walking know your subject.

Not only that but it is also not safe to walk more than 2 dogs at a time not just for the walker but the dogs as well.

Dog walkers have to be alert at all the times & be aware of their environment & surrounds around them and make sure they have a firm hold on the leash at all times. Not only would multiple dogs get tangled up and cause you to trip up, maybe a little dog fight might happen between the dogs you are walking .

How are you going to control this with multiple dogs on hand. If they see a cat and the dog/s bolt out to chase it not only would this pull the walker over and cause injury to the walker more than likely they would let go of the leash and therefore set your dogs free. What a disaster. Not only do they have to get one dog back but 3 or 4 no thanks it’s an impossible ask.

If you are thinking of a career in dog walking go to the dogs home and volunteer to walk dogs for them go through the rules and safety regulations of how to safely walk a dog. Then walk dogs for them 5 to 7 days straight for a month. I always say if you can walk a dogs home dog you can walk anything.

If you have lasted and still love it after a month then you are ready to be a good dedicated dog walker. If you do please call me because you are a rare individual that is for sure and we can do with you on our team.

Not only that dog walking is 7 days a week clients do not want you to just walk week days but weekends too and there is no penalty rates.

It is not a 9 to 5 job some of our walkers start walking in the dark am and finish in the dark pm especially in the winter months,

They run from one job to another all day every day.

You must also provide insurance as once money changes hands for a service of any kind you are liable/sueable for any mishaps or accidents that may occur whilst you are walking clients dogs,These can be dog fights not just by the dog you are walking but some other dog attacking your clients dog,if you lose a dog or a dog gets run over. You must protect yourself and your clients from anything that may arise.

Some clients do contact you to walk their dogs as they are time poor and do not have time to walk or they are elderly or disable,Not all dogs are hard to walk but if you want to be a successful dog walking service you can not pick and choose or you will not make money.

Expenses & tools you need to run a successful dog walking business is insurance, dog leads and haltis, dog coats of various sizes for bad weather, petrol money to get from one job to another, old towels to dry the dogs off.Lots of treats of course all dogs love to get a treat’.

A good hat, sunglasses,2 very good all weather coats/Jackets with a hood,2 pairs of water proof pants, Gloves with good gripping on the palm side a Beanie and most important good and supportive walking shoes.

Also patience lots of patience not just for dogs but starting a business such as dog walking is slow and you may not get a job for months and then only a holiday walk and then nothing else. If you want to start off with clientele asap you need to call us as we can give you work straight away and you do not need to take on the burdens of running a business

The Pro’s of dog walking are

You get to meet lovely people who adore their dogs

You get to meet some awesome dogs and bond with them naughty and good, but the naughty ones are just as lovable as the good you will see, Exercise and fitness.

  RESPECT

So next time you see a professional dog walker out and about walking dogs for a job have a respect for what they do they deserve it and the dogs & owners love them too!

If you are looking for walkers who are dedicated and we have trailed and tested them so you do not have to go through the disappointment. Let us take the worry out of that and do the hard work for you so you may get the dog walker you and your dog deserves!

Professional pet sitters are often licensed, and insured for liability including care, custody, and control of the pets in their care. Many pet sitters are also bonded or insured for theft. Pet sitters usually have training, such as pet first ai, or pet sitting accreditation. A number of professional organizations exist to help pet sitters improve their services.

Services

There are many different services which can be offered by pet sitters.

Vacation care

During vacation pet sitting, a pet sitter visits a client’s home several times, as required. The exact length of visit is determined by both pet owners and pet sitters, averaging from fifteen to forty-five minutes. Typical services offered include: providing the pets’ customary diet and exercise routine, administration of medications, vitamins, and other special care, monitoring health and arranging for medical treatment in case of illness. Most pet sitters bill clients on a per-visit or per-day basis, including additional charges for multiple pets, travel expenses, and special tasks. Less commonly, pet sitters offer live-in care. Pet sitters also provide house sitting in conjunction with vacation pet care.

Dog walking

Main article: Dog walking

Pet sitters also provide dog walking services. Disabled clients and the elderly often hire pet sitters to exercise and care for their pets if they are unable to do so.

Pet sitters may also offer other more aggressive methods of exercise for dogs during dog walking appointments. These may include jogging, running, or doggy parks and beaches with client dogs.

Dog Boarding

Main article: Dog Boarding

Pet sitters may also offer Home Dog Boarding. Much like traditional house sitting – this involves the dog boarding in the sitter’s own home environment. Allowing increased levels of exercise and play, confidence and social skills. Stress relief and alleviation of boredom. Constant supervision from a caring staff of one. Good behaviour and manners are promoted and rewarded and this provides peace of mind that the dog is safe and happy without the guilty feeling about leaving the pet home alone.

Cesar’s Tips: For Dog Sitting/Dog Minding/Dog Minders

School has started again, but you may already be planning to get away for the holidays. Are you concerned about how your dog will handle being away from you? Put the worry aside and get prepared with these tips!

Picking the Right Sitter: Try to choose someone who you know can help balance and calm your dog if he is anxious or nervous when you are first away. Remember, it’s about energy and matching energy. Leaving a hyperactive dog with an elderly relative is not a good idea.

Most important is that you make sure you leave your dog with someone who understands the needs of your dog. Ask yourself whether you can trust that this person is adhering to your rules, boundaries, and limitations, or whether they are creating a problem by not maintaining your leadership.

Location: Ideally, you would have someone stay at your home and maintain the dog’s normal routine. This means keeping their walk and feeding and sleeping schedule the same.

But if you leave them with someone in another location, it’s a good idea to get them familiar with this place on several occasions prior to leaving them there for an extended stay.

Before you change your dog’s routine (by having them stay somewhere other than your own home), get them used to change. This way, any concerns or separation anxiety is prevented.

If you choose to board your dog, look at and thoroughly research the place beforehand. Talk to people who have boarded their dogs there before. What’s the energy like there? How does it smell? How do you feel? How do the caretakers there act and react with the dogs there? Do they practice “nose, eyes, ears” and “no touch, no talk, no eye contact,” when they meet new dogs? All of this will tell you how well-informed they are to ensure your dog is happy there. Just because you leave your dog at a boarding facility doesn’t mean you have to follow all of their rules. If you have specific restrictions or requests, you can ask. If they won’t accommodate your needs, they probably aren’t going to accommodate the dog’s either.

Expectations: If you leave your dog with a family member or a friend, make sure they know the requirements. If your dog is used to a one-hour walk every morning, they will not be fulfilled by a 15-minute walk instead. In fact, the reverse is better. When my dogs are at the ranch, for example, the routine changes. Instead of a 45-minute walk, we go for an hour and a half hike. When you change the environment, it’s good to also change – and increase – the daily challenges, the physical and mental stimulation. This keeps the dog’s mind and body more relaxed and less focused on their primary pack leader being away.

Keep in mind that if you leave the dog at a kennel for a long time, they are going to spend most of their time in the kennel. There are exceptions, of course, but this is something to generally be aware of. So when you pick up your dog, he is going to have a lot of pent up energy. Take him for the longest walk of his life when you pick him up!

If your only option is to leave your dog with someone who cannot maintain your exercise routine or schedule, hire a dog walker to help share the responsibilities. Ones who are comfortable walking more than three dogs at a time are probably going to be the best handlers, even if you just have one dog.

Details: Just as parents leave a checklist for a babysitter, you can leave a checklist for your pet sitter. Include important information like the vet’s phone number and address, the closest 24-hour emergency hospital, any medications they will need while you are gone, allergies, feeding schedule, how often to check their water bowl, any behavioral problems, whether you allow them on the furniture or whether they get people food, how often they get a treat, and any other information that will help keep your dog as happy, fulfilled, and balanced as possible while you are away.

If your sitter isn’t well educated or familiar with dogs, you might also give them some information on household items or foods that may be toxic to them, which you can find here.

Relax! If you take all of the above into consideration, you have taken the proper steps to ensure a pleasant experience for your dog while you are gone, so enjoy your time away. Even if you aren’t with your canine companion, a calm-assertive attitude will help keep you stress-free!

Dogs on the Domain!

KANE YOUNG   |   October 10, 2011 12.01am

FROM sizeable samoyeds to tiny three-legged terriers, hundreds of hounds took their owners out on the town for yesterday’s Dogs on the Domain day.

Run by the Hobart City Council in conjunction with the Hobart Dog Walking Association, the Dogs’ Home of Tasmania and the Hobart Canine Obedience Club, Dogs on the Domain is a popular annual event which gives dogs the chance to make new furry friends while their owners get the latest information, products and services from a range of stallholders.

Yesterday’s event kicked off with a massive group walk (either 1.3km or 2.8km) around the Domain, with each registered pooch receiving a doggy bag full of goodies and the chance to win a professional photography session.

The ever-popular pet parade and fancy dress competition also attracted many entries.

The Hobart Canine Obedience Club held agility, obedience and flyball demonstrations throughout the day, while local dog listener Merry Conway was on hand to give owners handy hints for getting their unruly pets to behave.
