Dog walking gum tree & internet adds An insight to dog walking by a reputable professional pet care company

So you want to be a dog walker?

How we accumulate our clients mostly is when they are at their wits end and they have been left in the lurch had their time wasted by so called unprofessional people who think that dog walking would be  fun & easy money. All clients want is a reliable service that will turn up and walk their dogs. Rain hail or shine. You also do not have to mind picking up other peoples dogs poo.

Let me tell you dog walkers earn every cent they make & should be respected. When most people want to pay you to walk a dog it is not because the dogs are easy to walk believe me. Most clients have big pully, unruly dogs who are dog aggressive not trained to leash walk ect.To be pulled around by a big pully or small pully dog trying to control them for a full 1/2  hour or full hour is not fun. We trail and test walkers over a 2 week period.

The drop out rate is incredible. In 5 years I have found 4 regular reliable people who walk dogs all day. This would be out of close to a hundred that we have interviewed and started to trial. Not only have they wasted my time but have wasted the time of my dedicated team who help along the way with the process. To give help them the so called easy making money job of their dreams.

Some of these advertised dog walkers on gum tree and other employment internet sites.

Always make me laugh or smile with yeah right when I see them advertise walking your dog for $5 or $10 per hour  for  2 dogs $12 to $18 and then they offer a price for 3 or 4 not only is this unprofessional as it is against the law in the dog act to walk more than 2 dogs at a time If you are going to work with dogs you should know the council rules and regulations of how many dogs is acceptable to walk at each time.If you want a career in dog walking know your subject.

Not only that but it is also not safe to walk more than 2 dogs at a time not just for the walker but the dogs as well.

Dog walkers have to be alert at all the times & be aware of their environment & surrounds around them and make sure they have a firm hold on the leash at all times. Not only would multiple dogs get tangled up and cause you to trip up, maybe a little dog fight might happen between the dogs you are walking .

How are you going to control this with multiple dogs on hand. If they see a cat and the dog/s bolt out to chase it not only would this pull the walker over and cause injury to the walker more than likely they would let go of the leash and therefore set your dogs free. What a disaster. Not only do they have to get one dog back but 3 or 4 no thanks it’s an impossible ask.

If you are thinking of a career in dog walking go to the dogs home and volunteer to walk dogs for them go through the rules and safety regulations of how to safely walk a dog. Then walk dogs for them 5 to 7 days straight for a month. I always say if you can walk a dogs home dog you can walk anything.

If you have lasted and still love it after a month then you are ready to be a good dedicated dog walker. If you do please call me because you are a rare individual that is for sure and we can do with you on our team.

Not only that dog walking is 7 days a week clients do not want you to just walk week days but weekends too and there is no penalty rates.

It is not a 9 to 5 job some of our walkers start walking in the dark am and finish in the dark pm especially in the winter months,

They run from one job to another all day every day.

You must also provide insurance as once money changes hands for a service of any kind you are liable/sueable for any mishaps or accidents that may occur whilst you are walking clients dogs,These can be dog fights not just by the dog you are walking but some other dog attacking your clients dog,if you lose a dog or a dog gets run over. You must protect yourself and your clients from anything that may arise.

Some clients do contact you to walk their dogs as they are time poor and do not have time to walk or they are elderly or disable,Not all dogs are hard to walk but if you want to be a successful dog walking service you can not pick and choose or you will not make money.

Expenses & tools you need to run a successful dog walking business is insurance, dog leads and haltis, dog coats of various sizes for bad weather, petrol money to get from one job to another, old towels to dry the dogs off.Lots of treats of course all dogs love to get a treat’.

A good hat, sunglasses,2 very good all weather coats/Jackets with a hood,2 pairs of water proof pants, Gloves with good gripping on the palm side a Beanie and most important good and supportive walking shoes.

Also patience lots of patience not just for dogs but starting a business such as dog walking is slow and you may not get a job for months and then only a holiday walk and then nothing else. If you want to start off with clientele asap you need to call us as we can give you work straight away and you do not need to take on the burdens of running a business

The Pro’s of dog walking are

You get to meet lovely people who adore their dogs

You get to meet some awesome dogs and bond with them naughty and good, but the naughty ones are just as lovable as the good you will see, Exercise and fitness.

  RESPECT

So next time you see a professional dog walker out and about walking dogs for a job have a respect for what they do they deserve it and the dogs & owners love them too!

If you are looking for walkers who are dedicated and we have trailed and tested them so you do not have to go through the disappointment. Let us take the worry out of that and do the hard work for you so you may get the dog walker you and your dog deserves!

Pets Hobart Pets Tasmania,Pet training Hobart,Dog walking Hobart.Dogs Holidays,Dog Boarding.All dogs love a walk.

How to walk a dog That pulls

Dogs have to be taught to walk nicely on leash. They’re not born knowing that they shouldn’t pull ahead or lag behind. Teaching leash manners can be challenging because dogs move faster than us and are excited about exploring outdoors. Leashes constrain their natural behaviors and movements. Some dogs are determined to run around as fast as they possibly can. Other dogs want to stop, sniff and urinate on anything and everything in their paths. To teach your dog to walk without pulling, it’s critical that you neverallow him to pull. If you’re inconsistent, your dog will continue to try pulling because sometimes it pays off.

How to Teach Your Dog to Walk Nicely on a Leash

You’ve probably seen dogs at shows or on TV who prance alongside their handlers, staring up with rapt attention. These dogs have received extensive training in precision heeling. It’s impressive but demanding work. Precision heeling demands constant attention from both dog and handler and is not appropriate for long periods of time, like for your daily walks around the block or to the park. Even dogs trained to heel need to learn to walk on leash without pulling when they’re not formally heeling.

You can use various methods to teach dogs to walk without pulling on leash. No single method works for all dogs. Here are some overall guidelines before we look at several methods:

  • Until your dog learns to walk without pulling, consider all walks training sessions. Keep training sessions frequent, short and fun for your dog.
  • Since loose-leash training sessions will be too short and slow to provide adequate exercise, find other ways to exercise your dog until he’s mastered loose-leash walking. In fact, you’ll succeed more quickly if you find a way to tire your dog out before taking him on a training walk. Dogs pull, in part, because they’re full of excess energy. So unless you can expend that energy, your dog will find it hard to control himself. Before you train, play fetch in a hallway or your backyard, play a vigorous game of tug, or drive your dog to the park so that he can play with his buddies.
  • Teaching a dog to walk without pulling requires plenty of rewards. Use highly desirable treats that your dog doesn’t get at other times. Soft treats are best so your dog can eat them quickly and continue training. Most dogs love wieners, cheese, cooked chicken or ham, small jerky treats or freeze-dried liver. Chop all treats into small peanut-sized cubes.
  • Walk at a quick pace. If your dog trots or runs, she’ll have fewer opportunities to catch a whiff of something enticing, and she’ll be less inclined to stop and eliminate every few steps. Additionally, you are far more interesting to your dog when you move quickly.
  • If you expect your dog to control herself while walking on leash, you must also expect her to control herself before you go for a walk. If she gets wildly excited as you prepare for a walk, you need to focus on that first. Walk to the door and pick up the leash. If your dog races around, barks, whines, spins or jumps up, just stand completely still. Do and say absolutely nothing until your dog calms down a bit. As soon as she has all four paws on the floor, slowly reach toward her to clip on the leash. If she starts to bounce around or jump up on you, quickly bring your hands (and the leash) back toward your body. Wait until your dog has all four paws on the floor again. Then slowly reach toward her again to attach her leash. Repeat this sequence until your dog can stand in front of you, without jumping up or running around, while you clip on her leash. This may seem like a tedious exercise at first, but if you’re consistent, your hard work will pay off. Eventually, your dog will learn to stand still while you attach her leash.

story of some clients of mine who I transport their service dog Bachey to and from the great trainers in Sandford Paws and People.I tell you this lady is a true brave person we could all learn from this couple an Australian love story.

The photos below go with this amazing true story of my pet taxi clients.I admire Stephanie she is a true championLike a new window opening up good can come out of bad!!!
(A story that the Editors are so pleased to include in this edition

of Paraview – thanks Andrew and Stephanie)In a blink of an eye your life can change like mine did! by Andrew Hodges
Before I had my accident at the age of fourteen years I was an excellent student, both physically and mentally. I studied all my subjects at the highest level and was in the top five percent of my class. I was good at maths and science and won awards in these subjects and physically I was a good long distance runner and came second in the under 15 cross country race.As a common teenager I felt invincible and before life struck me with a blow I felt nothing could possibly happen to me but on the evening of June 26th 1987 at about 6.00 pm I had a serious accident which left me severely disabled surviving a traumatic brain injury. I have had to rely on what others tell me about the incident as I have lost that memory for which I am grateful.

When you suffer an accident causing a brain injury many survivors never remember what took place and our memory of past and present get scrambled up. I went with some friends to look at an
advertising blimp which was anchored where the Derwent Entertainment Centre has now been built. It was advertising cigarettes and I was hoping to get some because like a lot of silly teenagers I used to have a surreptitious “puff”. About 6.30pm I said to my friends,” I had better go home now.” One of my friends grabbed another friend’s bike and took off across the Brooker Highway. I followed running to get it back. My friends tell me I was hit by a car and thrown across the road leaving my shoes behind. My glasses were found 100 metres down the road. A man in a house nearby who had some first aid experience telephoned the ambulance and then attended to me and according to him I sat up and said, “I am alright” and then lapsed into unconsciousness. My friends got the owner of a local pizza restaurant to phone my parents who came and found me lying on the road with an ambulance in attendance. I was taken to the hospital where I ended up in intensive care critically ill with the possibility I might die. I had a badly broken right arm, extensive bruising and grazing and a dislocated knee and sustained very serious head injuries when I hit the gutter. This resulted in a right frontal lobe injury which has affected my memory and my thinking patterns and a brain/neck stem injury caused by my brain twisting in my skull which has left me with my physical disabilities and my difficulties with speech.

I spent 9 months in a coma unable to communicate in any way, being fed through a nasal gastric tube. I have a few very vague memories of this time. I spent two and a half years in the hospital as there was nowhere else for me to go where I could be looked after with all the disabilities I have. My doctor said at the time I was the most seriously injured person he had seen who had survived, so I was really at the cutting edge of severe disability and there were no facilities for someone like me.

It took awhile to accept that I would be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life, I finally did and am glad that I have had no choice but to be so reliant on others for help, for that is the only way I can accept their help. If I had a choice I would do everything myself. I have accepted also that life, as it is for me, is all I can and want to do. I have had to learn to use my left hand because my right hand is too weak and can now feed myself with a spoon and put my plate on the table when I have finished. I had to learn to talk again and it is not easy for me to talk. It takes a lot of energy as it does for most things I do. I went back to school at Cosgrove High School where I completed my year 10 using my Epsom speech computer to communicate.

I enjoy life the best I can with the things I can do myself. I obtain my enjoyment from watching other people accomplishing things which they can do well. Here I am then…Andrew Hodges the world’s greatest spectator.

A beam of light from black ice by Stephanie Henry
Howdy, my name is Stephanie Marie Henry and I want to tell you about my traumatic brain injury that happened on February 02, 1996 that halted mine and my 6 year old jewel Crystan’s life as we knew it. I was on my way to work at the Texas Maximum Security Prison Conally Unit in Kenedy, Texas living in Beeville, Texas so having a drive 30 minutes to get to work. I was a single mommy self divorcing which my life as I knew it got ‘put on hold’.

I was living life recklessly and stressed out being a single mommy going through a divorce, also working at a high security prison was an add on to my stress level. It was a cold and icy, raining day when I was driving to work so I went on black ice and lost control of my Ford Ranger truck spinning around and ended up on the wrong side of the road hitting a bridge rail that stopped me. I went into shock at the time as I hit my head on the steering wheel but thank goodness my jewel Crystan saved my life, from being dislodged from the truck, because when I dropped her off at daycare before going to work she would not let me leave until I put my seatbelt on due to the weather conditions that I never wore before and that held me in my seat and saved my life. I banged my forehead on the steering wheel after I hit the bridge rail so hard that my seatbelt kept me down and I had the part of the seatbelt that goes across your chest behind me cause I was living life on the edge and having that part of the seatbelt behind me allowed my upper torso to sling over and hit the passenger seat. I hit my skull so forcefully on the upper part of the passenger seat that the metal inside, that
shapes the seat, crushed and entered my skull.

Having a brain injury of any kind open/closed will change the process of life as you know it and you go through slowly day by day year by year hurtling/overcoming/succeeding and achieving in rehabilitation stages goals you set.

My surviving/rehabilitation goes into a fuller story and I’ve been writing a book that explains it more plus my reward meeting Andrew and our falling deeply in love relationship that added up to marriage. Texas Trooper Jimmy Moore, who found me when I had my accident and after seeing me living and recovering farther than expected, feels all of my achieved goals set is God’s way of saying He is not through with me yet. Maybe Andrew is one of the reasons why……… Andrew plus+ Stephanie plus+ plus+ Bachey Hodges = Life can end up good from suffering a traumatic brain injury!!!

Andrew and I met on June 2006 in a chat room for traumatic brain injury survivors. So I guess that is how it all started, with a conversation in a chat room, who would have thought! I once gave Andrew a plaque that says ‘Once you choose HOPE anything’s possible’ it’s so true because our internet love proves what that plaque says. Our chance internet meeting, falling deeply in love on the internet and my subsequent migration, proves that anything is possible. That fresh starts are available to anyone with an open mind, courage and hope for the future. Our marriage was 10th of September 2011 and we honeymooned at the ParaQuad unit in Glenorchy where we are having to stay after selling our house waiting for a new one so we are in the ParaQuad again on our 1st marriage anniversary!!

So 5 years building a relationship proves the advantage of patience, time and hope starting a new
long term future together and with our 3rd family member service (HERO Bachey) dog in training!!!
My goal for Andrew is making him be as independent as he can be. Being with a learned again
independent wife that can relate to Andrew also suffering a brain injury, he is now talking/writing
for himself along with having his own mobile phone he wears around his neck. For this new life
now is what Andrew/Stephanie need & want.
